Installation

Who’s at the Table pays homage to the artist’s ancestors—Black women who fought to claim spaces where they and others were systematically excluded. The installation centers a 1950s breakfast table, a symbol of the “ideal” white American family, reimagined here as a site of Black matrilineal legacy, protest, and pride. Set with wedding china and heirlooms from the artist and her ancestors, the table reflects Black womanhood from the 1920s to today, honoring kin-keeping, care, and resilience. Above the table, gold-framed portraits of the protagonist form an altar of remembrance. Viewers are invited to sit in the armchair and read family history from the magazine rack while audio from a speaker plays interviews with the artist’s mother and grandmother, deepening the viewer’s knowing and experience.
